How to Split a PDF and Extract Only the Pages You Need
Splitting is useful when a large PDF contains one chapter, form or attachment you need to share separately. The key is to identify page numbers carefully and understand that displayed document numbers may differ from PDF page positions.
Identify the correct PDF page numbers
Use the page counter in your PDF viewer rather than a number printed in the footer. A cover sheet labelled with no number can make printed page 1 appear as PDF page 2.
Write a clear page range
Use a hyphen for a continuous range and commas for separate pages. For example, 1-3, 6, 9-10 creates one new PDF containing those pages in that order.
- Use 4 for one page
- Use 4-8 for a continuous section
- Use 2, 5, 9 for separate pages
Check context before sharing
Open the new PDF and confirm that the first and last extracted pages include the information a reader needs. Forms may require an instruction page, signature page or terms page that is easy to overlook.
Final checklist
- PDF positions were used, not printed labels
- First and last selected pages are correct
- Required instructions or signatures are included
- The smaller PDF opens normally
