How to Password Protect a PDF Safely
Password protection can reduce casual or unauthorised access to a PDF, but it works only when the password is strong and handled carefully. PDF Porter encrypts the file in your browser; it does not store your password and cannot recover it later.
Choose a password you can protect
Use a long, unique passphrase that is not reused for email, banking or another account. Avoid names, dates, company details and short predictable patterns.
- Prefer several unrelated words or a password-manager-generated value
- Store the password in a trusted password manager
- Do not place the password in the PDF filename
Protect and test the new PDF
Download the protected copy, close it and open it again. Confirm that it asks for the password and that every required page is present before you remove or archive any working copy.
Send the file and password separately
If the document is sensitive, avoid sending the PDF and its password in the same message. Use a different agreed channel for the password and confirm the recipient before sharing. Encryption does not prevent an authorised recipient from copying or forwarding content after opening it.
Final checklist
- Password is long and unique
- Protected PDF was reopened successfully
- All pages were checked
- File and password will be shared separately
